Getting Started
Whether you are a couple starting from scratch or need a complete closet makeover, it starts with both of you going through your belongings and deciding what’s going in the closet and what needs to go to the “donate pile”.
Next, sort your clothes by season. It’s best to swap clothes out each season to free up the space you need. You can find some great storage solutions for this later in this post.
When you start making your plan one of the best tips is to use all of your vertical space. If your ceiling is high enough, think about adding a second shelf above the hanging clothes. If you have a walk-in closet, you can add that shelf all the way around.
Even though you’re sharing the closet you each need your own designated space so choose your sides and let’s get started.
Clothes Storage
When you’re getting ready for your day, no one wants to have to dig through piles of clothes. This is where you need to make everything easily accessible. Here are a few ideas to maximize the space and organize your hanging clothes.
If you already have lots of hangers that you like, this could be the perfect answer. These hooks piggyback off of a hanger to hold another hanger. This way you can add as many or as few as you need.
These hanger organizers work with your own hangers too. Each one holds up to 5 hangers. They are designed to accommodate any kind of hanger.
Using this type of hanger will work for both of you. They’re great for skirts, shorts, or scarves and will be a much-needed space saver. The clips slid to fit any size of clothing.
This is another hanger that holds a lot but only takes up a small space, these hangers will be perfect for tank tops.
Hanging 5 pairs of pants in the space of 2 can free up some valuable space. These velvet hangers would also be great for ties and scarves. They come in white, black, and pink.
Here’s another set of stainless-steel hangers that hold 5 pairs of pants. You can hang both hooks on the rod to put the pants on or take them off, or simply slide them off the hanger.
Another space saving hanger. This one for shirts is designed so that each arm swings out to easily take the shirt off.
These dividers are a great way to organize things like sweaters or anything that you can fold and stack. This particular divider works on wooden shelves but I don’t think that they would work well on wire shelving. You can find some below that are perfect for wire shelves.
Shoe Storage
Shoes can quickly become a source of chaos in a shared closet. Here are several options to help organize them.
If you LOVE shoes, these clear acrylic storage boxes are perfect for you. They will keep your shoes clean and organized and they’re a great way to use your vertical space by stacking them on the shelf above the closet rod.
You can get your shoes off of the floor and into a mesh-lined shoe rack like this one. It can be hung on a door or mounted to a wall. This one will hold up to 36 pairs.
A tall shoe shelf like this only takes up about 2 feet of space and holds about 20 pairs of shoes.
Accessory Storage
Accessories like purses, scarves, belts, ties and hats need to have their own designated space too. Here are some great storage solutions.
Keeping your purses organized and visible is easy with this clear acrylic organizer that can sit on the shelf above your closet rod. This one has a bottom so it can be used on a wire shelf. It also has adjustable panels so it can accommodate wider purses.
Do you want to keep your purses clean and dust-free? This is ideal. Each one holds 4 purses, and they can be hung on a closet rod or on a door with the provided hooks. Another idea is to hang a hook (on a stud) high on the closet wall and hang it there. This organizer is about 48″ long so you would have plenty of space below to use for something else.
Each one of these wall-mounted hat racks holds 10 – 15 baseball caps. They are also great for hanging bags or backpacks, can be hung vertically or horizontally, and hold up to 35 pounds. If you’re hanging these in sheetrock, I’d recommend using anchors or screwing them into a stud.
There’s a good chance that as a couple, you both have MANY baseball caps. These wall-mounted hooks can be the perfect storage solution. Never have to hunt for your hat again.
Here’s a versatile little organizer. It will hold up to 24 belts, but it would also be perfect for necklaces.
Keep all of your belts and ties together and organized with an organizer like this. It has hooks on both sides of the wooden hanger.
Out Of Season Storage
Using some of the storage ideas below can keep your out-of-season clothing and shoes protected and tucked away until you need them. There is around 40 square feet of space under a king-sized bed and around 30 square feet of space under a queen-sized bed, so why not put that space to good use?
When it’s time to swap your seasonal clothes, packing them in this type of storage containers will keep them dust-free. This color happens to be my favorite, but these come in several colors.
These underbed shoe storage containers can hold up to 12 pairs of shoes in each one. It has adjustable dividers, a clear zipper top, and sturdy handles to help slide it from under the bed.
Sometimes a simple plastic bin is exactly what you need. This one has wheels to roll under your bed.
This underbed container is made with a steel frame so it can hold up to 66 pounds. The wheels are swivel 360 degrees .
Have you ever tried these? I have, and they really compact your clothes by 80%. These vacuum storage bags are also great for blankets too. This set comes with a compact electric pump to suck the air out of the bags.
